William Gray, Baptist Pastor and Congressman, Dies at 71

bill-gray-280Former Congressman William Gray died suddenly this week. Gray served in the House of Representatives from 1978 to 1991 and was the first African American to be a majority whip. During that time, he was also pastor of Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia and traveled home from Washington to preach on Sundays. Gray left Congress to lead the United Negro College Fund. He was 71 years old.
