Friday (April 24) marked the 100th anniversary of the massacre of Armenians by Ottoman-era Turks, and debate has continued over whether the mass killings should be called genocide. Many countries, including the US, avoid using that word out of deference to Turkey. This week, several prominent US Muslim groups said the events of 1915 should not be characterized as genocide without more investigation. They said acknowledgment of the suffering of Armenians should be balanced by recognition of Turkish and Muslim suffering during the same period. Other religious groups insisted the massacre of Armenians should be called genocide.
