{"id":6681,"date":"2010-07-16T16:56:23","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T20:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pbs-wnet-preprod.digi-producers.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/?p=6681"},"modified":"2013-05-10T15:22:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:22:00","slug":"july-16-2010-haiti-six-months-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pbs-wnet-preprod.digi-producers.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/2010\/07\/16\/july-16-2010-haiti-six-months-later\/6681\/","title":{"rendered":" Haiti Six Months Later"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BOB ABERNETHY<\/strong>, Host: This week marked the six month anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti which killed more than 230,000 people.\u00a0Humanitarian groups say while there&#8217;s been some recovery, an overwhelming amount of work still needs to be done.\u00a0An estimated 1.5 million Haitians continue to be homeless, many enduring the rainy season in flimsy tarps and tents.<\/p>\n<p>Our managing editor Kim Lawton has been covering faith-based efforts in Haiti. She\u2019s been there twice since the earthquake. Kim, welcome. What do you hear?<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6698\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs-wnet-preprod.digi-producers.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2010\/07\/post01-haitiprogress.jpg\" alt=\"post01-haitiprogress\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/>KIM LAWTON<\/strong>, Managing Editor: Well, obviously there\u2019s a lot of frustration among the humanitarian community. The people that have been down there for six months now working. They\u2019re frustrated by so many problems that have kept them from doing all the good they\u2019d like to do. I mean, there\u2019s just so many obstacles. You\u2019ve got still a ton of rubble that\u2019s around, nowhere to put it. Bureaucracy, the infrastructure of the country was so devastated, so that the bureaucracy in place is cumbersome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABERNETHY<\/strong>: They can\u2019t\u2026they say they can\u2019t get the supplies through customs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LAWTON<\/strong>: Right, right, building things, getting things through customs, figuring out which office needs to approve what, and who needs to\u2014you know, what fees need to be paid, so that\u2019s really frustrating for them. And, you know, there are land issues. A lot of these tarps and tents have been set up on land that belongs to somebody else, and so straightening out that, you can\u2019t build more permanent housing if you can\u2019t figure out whose land it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6699\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs-wnet-preprod.digi-producers.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2010\/07\/post02-haitiprogress.jpg\" alt=\"post02-haitiprogress\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/>ABERNETHY<\/strong>: Yeah, I have a friend who\u2019s seen a lot of relief efforts all over the world, and he says he\u2019s never seen any place where there were so many Christian relief groups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LAWTON<\/strong>: Well, certainly many of these Christian groups and other faith groups really felt connected to Haiti. They\u2019d been working there in the past, and so they have spent a lot of time, and there were just a huge number of volunteers going down trying to help out, and we should say that even amidst all of the problems and the fact that more progress hasn\u2019t been made, they say there has been progress. You know, there are some positive things, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABERNETHY<\/strong>: And some things haven\u2019t happened that might have and that people feared, like epidemics and terrible security problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LAWTON<\/strong>: Well, mass starvation.  I mean, when you think about it, people aren\u2019t starving to death there. They\u2019re hungry, yes, but they\u2019re not starving to death. And so I think I\u2019m hearing a lot from the faith community, people saying it\u2019s going to take a really long time.
