Vice Admiral Francois Darlan
Vice Admiral Francois Darlan, chief of staff of the French Navy, who left Paris, Jan.18, for a joint inspection tour of French coastal defenses and colonial military establishments in Algeria and Morocco. He departed from Paris on the same day that the French Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets sailed from their bases at Brest and Toulon for "double action" maneuvers and a display of naval strength in the vicinity of Gibraltar.
