In 1613, feudal lord Date Masamune sent a Japanese diplomatic mission to Europe to negotiate with the Pope and the King of Spain in hopes opening a new trade route. Led by samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and Franciscan monk Luis Sotelo, the expedition spent seven years traveling one-third of the globe.

- [Narrator] On 'Secrets of the Dead,' 1613, two starkly different men sail halfway around the world from Japan.

- [Translator] Why would a Franciscan monk accompany a samurai?

- If you step foot in Japan as a missionary, you're facing almost certain death.

- [Narrator] But to establish a trade relationship between Spain and Japan, they first need the blessing of the Pope.
