Simon Schama on MetroFocus

On March 20th, Rafael Pi Roman, host of WNET’s weekly newsmagazine, MetroFocus, interviewed Simon Schama about his five-part documentary series, The Story of the Jews.

In this compelling conversation, Schama explains that he was driven to go beyond commonly held beliefs about Jewish culture and identity. “Stereotypes about the Jews still walk among us, and what happens, I think, to perceptions about the Jews is that they’re dominated, understandably but overwhelmingly, by the Holocaust and by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said. “One doesn’t want to…pretend those things aren’t important, but there’s a huge amount to learn and to celebrate in Jewish history as well, and it was an opportunity to really present that to a non-Jewish audience, to make connections beyond the…circle of Jews.”
