Democracy in the Rough
Map: Elections 2006: Places, Politics and Players: Bas-Congo

Jean-Pierre Bemba: 308,954 – 36.21%
Joseph Kabila: 118,684 – 13.91%

Politics: This small southwestern province is bordered by the Atlantic in the west, Angola in the south, and the capital, Kinshasa, in the north. As in the capital, Jean-Pierre Bemba received the majority of the vote. Election violence that resulted in the death of two children and missing names from the voter registration list marred the process.

Natural Resources: This province has some gold resources and access to the sea that make it an important logistical region.
