Headscarf Headlines Around the World: Austria

A brief controversy erupted in the Austrian city of Linz, when one school ordered a ban on headwear, including scarves and caps. The father of a Muslim girl quickly responded with a legal complaint, and local educational authorities rapidly reversed the ban on the grounds that it was illegal under Austria’s constitutional provisions for free expression of religion. Since this incident, Austrian politicians have generally upheld their country as a model of tolerance in this respect, and some press reports state that Muslim students have begun to flock to Austria in response to bans on headscarves in nearby European countries such as France and Germany.
