Headscarf Headlines Around the World: Morocco

The constitutional monarchy of Morocco has Islam as its official faith, and the country takes generally moderate stances on issues of religion, culture, and relations with the West. However, after the May, 2003 terrorist bombings in Casablanca which claimed 45 lives, fear of Islamist extremism in Morocco has led the government to place some limits on Muslim dress. Women wearing headscarves have been sent home from schools and businesses — particularly those that already have strong dress codes — like military and engineering academies, and occupations such as flight attendants and police.
