Politics: Former Congolese prime minister Antoine Gizenga, 80, won by a large margin in the province of Bandundu. Gizenga, a deputy prime minister to post-independence leader Patrice Lumumba in 1960, received 13 percent of the vote, following the 20 percent received by Jean-Pierre Bemba and 45 percent received by Joseph Kabila. Exiled from 1965 to 1992, Gizenga represents the Unified Lumumbist Party (PALU), a group dedicated to resurrecting Lumumba’s post-independence government.
Natural Resources: Though not as rich as its eastern neighbors, Bandundu has diamonds along the Kwango River.
