Today marks one year since Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, President Joe Biden addresses the nation

On Thursday, President Joe Biden addressed the nation — marking the anniversary of the U.S. Capitol insurrection. Taking direct aim at former President Donald Trump, Biden blamed him for the violent attack and said he “created and spread a web of lies.” Going on to say that Trump chose himself over his country and could not accept his loss, Biden reassured Americans that he will not allow anyone “to place a dagger on the throat of democracy.” As of today, 25 people from New Jersey have been charged for their participation in the insurrection. But do extremist propaganda and recruitment efforts remain a serious threat here? And since last year, where are we in terms of our efforts to track domestic terrorism?

president biden addressing the nation

today marking the anniversary of the u.s

capitol insurrection and taking direct

aim at former president trump blaming

him for the violent attack who he says

created and spread a web of lies going

on to say that trump chose himself over

his country and could not accept his

loss and reassuring americans that he

will not allow anyone to place a dagger

on the throat of democracy as of today

25 people from new jersey have been

charged for their participation in the

insurrection but do extremists

propaganda and recruitment efforts

remain a serious threat here in jersey

and since last year where are we in

terms of our efforts to track domestic

terrorism joanna gages reports as part

of exploring hate our ongoing series of

reports on anti-semitism racism and

extremism they pretty much rejected the

theory that this was just some

spontaneous crowd reaction so

yeah there's 700 who have been charged

the feds have said that they could

double that number easily if they wanted

to in the year since the deadly january

6th insurrection on the nation's capital

federal investigators have made great

strides in bringing the perpetrators to

justice of those 700 charged 25 are from

new jersey two of those 25

have

played out

one is scott fairland who

has the distinction of being the first

in the country to plead guilty to

assaulting a police officer on january

6. and several of those new jerseyans

charged are connected to the white

nationalist militia group the proud boys

daryl lamont jenkins whose organization

monitors and intercedes these groups

says the proud boys are still active

here in new jersey just last month we

had

a group of um proud boys travel up from

south jersey that's where that chapter

apparently is to woodbridge

and

it seems as though there aren't some

sort of

um across the country some sort of a

promotional tour to basically just try

to sell themselves

as decent folk who just are concerned

about the way things are going in the

country or what have you jenkins says

similar to the disbanding of the kkk the

proud boys no longer have a strong

national faction right now but are still

operating in smaller more localized

groups they're all still flying the same

colors we just have to look at it that

way i mean unlike the clan we're just in

the beginning of that

and

the proud boys are still

a cohesive group the fbi is uh well

equipped to uh

to

do a thorough investigation on the proud

boys now that they have identified that

as a key point in this investigation

there's also the ongoing investigation

by the congressional select committee a

group of seven lawmakers including

republican representatives liz cheney

and adam kinzinger trying to uncover

just how coordinated the events of that

day were they have made an enormous

amount of progress

in unearthing the origins of the january

6th insurrection

and they will continue to unearth more

they will they have the backing of the

justice department they can use their

powers of referral to the justice

department

we've only really seen the tip of the

iceberg are the investigations into what

happened on january 6 in your mind

satisfactory in terms of how politically

our nation should be handling what

happened

the one flaw i think is that the

republicans regard the presence of

representatives cheney and kenzinger as

somehow ornamental

that their presence doesn't really make

it bipartisan

they had the opportunity

but but

leader mccarthy turned down that

opportunity and the committee has its

own share of hurdles in accessing all of

the evidence it's seeking they're

meeting a lot of resistance as you know

a lot of people are unwilling and

refusing to come in and testify and

former president donald trump has asked

the supreme court to block official

records from being turned over to the

committee the court hasn't yet decided

whether it'll take the case but court

hearings for the 700 who are charged

will begin next month for nj spotlight
