Researcher Bios
Darlene Cavalier - Founder
Darlene Cavalier is a Professor at Arizona State University's School for the Future of Innovation in Society. Cavalier is the founder of SciStarter. She is also the founder of Science Cheerleaders, an organization of more than 300 current and former professional cheerleaders pursuing STEM careers; a cofounder of ECAST: Expert and Citizen Assessment of Science and Technology, a network of universities, science centers, and think tanks that produces public deliberations to enhance science policymaking; and a founding Board Member of the Citizen Science Association. She is an advisor at National Geographic, a member of the EPA's National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology, a coauthor of the National Academy of Sciences report on Citizen Science, and author of The Rightful Place of Science: Citizen Science.
Dr. Caren Cooper - Director of Research Partnerships
Dr. Caren Cooper is an associate professor in Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State University in the Chancellor's Faculty Excellence program on Leadership in Public Science. She is the author of Citizen Science: How Ordinary People Are Changing the Face of Discovery (The Overlook Press). She is an editor of Citizen Science: Theory & Practice, a journal of the Citizen Science Association. She has authored over 60 scientific papers, co-developed software to automate metrics of incubation rhythms, and co-created the citizen science projects NestWatch, CamClickr, Celebrate Urban Birds, and YardMap. The Cooper Citizen Science Lab runs Crowd the Tap, Sparrow Swap, and Sound Around Town.
Caroline Nickerson -- Managing Editor & Community Engagement Manager
Caroline is a Master of Public Policy student at American University with a focus on environmental and climate change policy. She also works with the UF-VA UNESCO Bioethics Unit, the Christensen Project, the D.C. Gator Club, and the Commission on Local Debates. Caroline manages SciStarter's Syndicated Blog Network, which encompasses the Public Library of Science, Discover Magazine, and SciStarter platforms. She also directs community engagement efforts at SciStarter, including the annual Citizen Science Day programs.
