Sooyong Park is a renowned documentary filmmaker who has devoted over twenty years to studying and filming Siberian tigers. Born in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 1964, Park studied English literature at Seoul National University before working at the Educational Broadcasting System in Korea, where he directed and produced nature documentaries from 1991 to 2010. Based on his philosophy that “nature is to be observed, not directed,” his works involve unimaginable patience and a painstaking devotion to becoming part of nature. His profound insights into the natural world and his warm affection for living creatures reveal that animals, like humans, have souls. Since 1995, Park has made seven documentaries about the struggles and survival of Siberian tigers at risk of extinction. His film The Death of Three Generations of Siberian Tigers (Siberia horangi 3dae ui jugeum), which this book is based on, received the audience award at the Jules Verne Film Festival and the Amba Prize at the Vladivostok Film Festival. His groundbreaking tiger research was also the subject of the award-winning film Siberian Tiger Quest, which aired on PBS. He lives in Seoul, Korea.
