Each week, we feature a worthy citizen science project or nature news segment from around the world. This week’s featured project is a blast from the past called Castaway by the North Carolina Museum of Nature Sciences.
Castaway describes its efforts as “salvag[ing] data from the station logs of research vessels operating in the Atlantic from the late 1960s through the 2010s.” The logs contain decades-old information on climate and marine species the vessels encountered. The paper records are now being made available to the public, and the information provided by deciphering the notes could help “contextualize and more accurately forecast the response of marine species to environmental change.”
