Fossil Atmospheres
Fossil Atmospheres is a climate change citizen science project by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and headquartered at the National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC).
According to their website, the project aims to learn about a species of tree that evolved pre-dinosaurs and has survived three mass extinctions. “… One species [of ginkgo tree] is still living today. We are researching how the cells of leaves on ginkgo trees have changed over time and how we can use this knowledge to learn about the ancient atmosphere of the Earth.”
