Project Plumage

With over 10,000 living species of birds in the world, many of which are covered with beautiful hues of feathers, scientists with the Natural History Museum in London are striving to figure out how birds have evolved to carry such magnificent plumage, and now you can help! By studying museum specimens online, you can help answer the key questions scientists working on the project hope to answer about bird diversity and evolution:

  • Just how colorful are birds?
  • How quickly does plumage color evolve?
  • Are evolutionary changes in plumage color associated with the origin of new species?
